Why we started
Armoria began with a drawer. A good drawer, admittedly — but a drawer all the same, where a grandmother’s chain, four rings and a pair of earrings had quietly become one object. Nothing was lost. Everything was tangled.
Jewellery is small, but it is rarely trivial. A wedding band, a first pair of real earrings, a watch that belonged to someone who is no longer here — these are the few possessions people reach for daily and still want to hand down. They deserve better than a tangle at the back of a dresser.
So we set out to build the opposite of that drawer: trays that lift out, compartments that stay put, lids that close softly, and a lining that will not scratch a stone or dull a chain. Ten pieces, one system, made to sit on a dresser for thirty years.
What we make
Our collection is deliberately small. Three families of products, each solving one part of the same problem:
- Wooden jewellery boxes. Solid black walnut and oak, hand-finished and felt-lined, from a single stackable tray to a five-layer chest with a mirror in the lid.
- Leather and travel cases. Full-grain leather over a rigid frame, sized to fit a carry-on and lined so that nothing shifts in transit.
- Display and trays. Glass-lidded cases and stackable velvet trays for people who would rather look at their collection than hide it.
Everything is designed to work together. A travel case sits on top of a tray stack. A tray stack fits inside a chest. Nothing is orphaned when your collection grows.
Materials we choose, and why
Solid walnut and oak
We use solid timber rather than veneer over particle board. Solid wood can be sanded, re-oiled and repaired; veneer cannot. Walnut gives us a deep, quiet brown that flatters gold; oak gives us a paler ground that makes silver and pearls read clearly.
Felt and velvet lining
Our linings are soft, pH-neutral and tarnish-friendly. They cushion a stone without abrading it, and they hold a chain in place so it does not slide into the next compartment. Linings are glued with a low-odour adhesive, not stapled.
Solid brass hardware
Hinges, clasps and pulls are solid brass, not brass-plated zinc. They cost more and they last longer. Where a piece needs a soft close, we build a soft close into the hinge rather than adding a plastic damper that will fail first.
Full-grain leather
Our travel cases use full-grain leather, which keeps the natural surface of the hide and develops a patina instead of peeling. We do not use bonded leather, and we say so plainly.
How it is made
Each piece passes through six stages: timber selection, cutting and joinery, hand sanding through four grits, oil and wax finishing, lining and hardware, then a final inspection where every hinge is opened and closed twenty times and every tray is lifted out and set back.
Because we work in solid wood, no two pieces are identical. Grain pattern, tone and the precise depth of figure will vary from the photographs on this site. That is a property of the material, not a defect — and it is the reason we photograph real production pieces rather than renders.
What we promise
- Honest materials. If we say walnut, it is walnut. If we say full-grain, it is full-grain.
- No plastic packaging. Paper, card and moulded pulp, with a recyclable outer carton.
- Free shipping, no minimum. On every order to the contiguous United States.
- Thirty days to change your mind. Unused, in its original packaging, no interrogation.
- A real person on the other end. Every email is answered by someone who has handled the product.
